Live At Cosmo Bar (15-09-07)

While running the radio station we started putting on some very small Magic Waves parties in Brighton, underneath the Cosmopolitan Hotel in a venue near the seafront appropriately named Cosmo Bar. While it was mainly friends and a few bemused locals in the crowd we had a raucous time of it as always and in hindsight it was clearly the humble beginnings of much bigger things to come. Here's a cassette I recorded live there in September 2007.

Italo Visions Mix (2006)

One thing you quickly realise when starting up a radio station is that you can never have enough DJ mixes to broadcast! While we were very lucky in having some incredible mix donations for Magic Waves from our friends and allies I had to go into "mix machine mode" for the next few years and got on with cranking out as many as I physically could. 'Italo Visions' was one from the end of 2006 that seems to capture that moment well to me, the excitement of the time and the magic feeling in the air...

MAGIC WAVES RADIO STREAM (14-05-06)

Magic Waves went on air for the first time on 1st May 2006, a labour of love broadcast from a flat perched above Brighton station, and spent the next three years operating 24-7 in the spirit of classic pirate radio in the recently dawning internet age as a stream on our own website (after which we moved over to Intergalactic FM and became a radio show instead). Here's a recording from two weeks into transmission, resplendent with homemade jingles and a musical balance that was the sign of much to come...

Live At Brighton Festival Fringe (2004)

Recorded live at a party we threw at The Jazz Place in Brighton as part of the city's Festival Fringe a decade ago in 2004. This was also the first time that the name Cyber Dance appeared in print on a flyer, as the work to get the label launched was well underway at this point. However at this time the label that was operational and fully up-and-running was Human Shield (run by Peter Mangalore and future Cyber Dance cohorts Ali Renault and Tommy Walker 3), and the party was held under that name with the line-up featuring old friends Multiplex who had a couple of releases out with them by then, and Autogull who would master the first Cyber Dance release shortly afterwards.

Fantasy Mix (2001)

This one came hot on the heels of the last post, and it was my first mixtape in an Italo-Hi-NRG-electro style, although it's just one side of a D60 cassette. Again it's slightly on the raw side, and full of classic tape hiss - but the feeling is all there and it was clearly a significant step in the evolution of all things Magic Waves and Cyber Dance. And as with the last post it's interesting to note how many of these tracks still get spun at our parties today... But this was our first time with Koto, Kano, Jago and co, and the first time is always something special!

Lost In The Megazone (2000)

As it seems like a suitable place to start this was my first ever full-length mix-cassette, recorded back in 2000 in Brighton around the time we were putting on the Molecular Breakdown night, which was the town's first ever dedicated electro party. Joining me for daily mix sessions at home was Peter Mangalore, and we cranked out a small mountain of cassettes with each of us handling a side each. This one however was my first full solo tape. The mixing is rough and ready but full of energy, and some of the tunes contained in it are still in my DJ bag today... Download or playback at the links below.
